Is it just me?...

Hi everyone,

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that we are really not getting much for our money in the weekly shop?

I have been thinking of changing supermarkets lately because of so many errors from asda with my online shop. But when I do a price comparison, asda comes up the cheapest! I really don't know what to do.

Asda is the cheapest, but the prices continue to climb. I am not happy with how much we spend and end up removing items from my basket (online) to get my spending under control. It's not always food that's the problem, as we get all our toiletries, household stuff and washing powder etc in with the groceries. It's still too much to spend though and I'm looking at ways of cutting back so I can get some treats for Christmas time. This seems to be a constant battle. After Christmas I will be focusing on this heavily and will be changing the way I shop and cook. Meanwhile, I will be making sure we have a good Christmas without overspending.

My Christmas preparations will begin over the next couple of weeks and I will be blogging my ideas. We (Daisy and I) will be baking, crafting for decorations and gifts.

The declutter/sort out is still underway...some items are ready to be gifted, some bags have already gone to the charity shop and some have been thrown out or recycled. I have lots of recycling/upcycling projects planned and will share these if you're interested?? I also have some bits I will sell eventually.

I have been cooking from scratch and baking but don't always remember to photograph it! Please comment below if you are still interested in seeing my meal plans. I sometimes wonder if those types of blog post can get boring for you? Also, if I'm cooking meals like spag bol (today) and toad in the hole for example, do you want these recipes? I don't want to insult anybody by providing the basics, but we all cook a well known recipe slightly differently.

January onwards will be frugal and I will be compiling a bank of cheap and tasty recipes to cook in the new year. A new year always inspires me to try harder.

Back soon,

Mandy x

  1. The trouble with supermarkets if you do all your shop in one store, some things are bargains and they put the price up on other things, I steer away from tesco now and do more in Lidl and Morrisons, but I also use home bargains, b & m and those sort of stores more, and of course approved foods.

    1. I know, but I live in a village and don't drive so it makes it difficult to visit lots of different shops. It's much easier to get everything in one place x

  2. I dont much in the way of food shopping, meat I buy twice a year from the butcher, veggies we grow and i preserve the glut, tea sugar flour butter and milk are my main buys, cleaning products I have cut down to a minimum the same with toiletries and buy those in bulk from costco, but then I dont have young ones to cater for any more so that makes shopping lot easier and cheaper.
I would be interested in your upcyling ideas please :-)

  4. Food shopping is ridiculously expensive now......well, it can be if you're not a savvy shopper. We've recently shopped around and bought meat & fish in several different shops where it was on offer or in the reduced cabinet, our freezers are now full and will keep us going for at least 2 or 3 months. So for the next few weeks I will be able to reduce our shopping bill by meal planning, writing a shopping list and only having to buy dairy and veggies, hopefully. Got out of the habit of making bread but am starting again, that's a big money saver and of course homemade bread tastes so much better. I always like to see recipes, Mandy - if only to see whether someone else has a different (and better!) way of doing things.

  6. I for one enjoy reading others recipes, there's always something different they do and it's always worth trying, so keep them coming please.
We, in the past, have been grocery shopping snobs, my opinion of myself no one else so please don't jump on me. We've shopped at the big s/markets for years then Lydll and Aldi and Job Lot came to town we tried them and we're happy shopping at any of them. There's only two of us plus my two pooches but my food bill was hitting the £100 mark each week, ridiculous! Needless to say it's less than half that now and I still thinking I could bring it down further. That's why I enjoy blogging you can pick up good tips from others like yourself, so keep sharing please lovely lady. I've been stock piling Comfort fabric conditioner and Surf wash powder from our local co-op it's been at half price!
