Going back in time!

Hi everyone!

I thought I'd share my thoughts with you of how I love going back in time.

I have shown a keen interest in history since primary school when we studied the Victorians and World War Two. All of the books I read whether fiction or non-fiction are set in the past. I absolutely love living history programmes and record so many just in case I have time to sit and watch them! As I've got older, I have developed a huge interest in all things 1970s. I was born in 1971 so do remember a lot of that decade, although I was a teenager in the 1980s so there are loads of memories there too. My taste in home decor and household items is definitely 70s now...I'm actually embracing the brown and orange floral prints which I used to hate! Here's a few little purchases I've made over the past few months at the boot sale...

I suppose it's a bit of a hobby searching for bits and pieces and I never spend very much! I would love a vintage/retro house and will start with the kitchen.

We actually eat very much like I did in my childhood. The 1970s are known for the processed food available, but I think a lot of families didn't eat the typical freezer to oven meals. A lot of women were still at home looking after the children (or only part time) and had time to cook from scratch. We had the odd thing like Angel Delight, but generally my diet was home cooked and full of fresh vegetables etc. this got me thinking and although I have lost weight by following a diet, I'm not happy with the amount of processed food. My tummy has not been happy either :(

My snack cupboard is full, so are the tins and packets cupboard...this is not how I want to eat or spend my husbands hard earned cash!! Don't even get me started on processed cheese! Low fat or not.

So I am trying something different. I will go back traditional, with the added awareness of where I am clearly greedy. I will share photos of my meals to keep me on track too.

So my blog writing is refreshed after my break and I'm inspired again. I will be taking a new direction but it is definitely thrifty.

I hope you will join me :)

Mandy xx

  1. LOVING these pictures- I do not own any green Beryl- but most of the church kitchens I know still possess lots. I do have brown smoked glass ramekins and embroidered traycloths. And I have some snowflake pattern Pyrex. But the bottom picture is my favourite- we were given three tea trays in that brown/orange M&S pattern when we married in 1979 and they are still in regular use.
Like you , I am trying to eat fewer snacks and more proper home cooked food. It takes more planning, but it is worth it in the end. Looking forward to your pictures

    2. Thanks Angela.

I love the green beryl ware and remember it from village halls too. I also love the old glassware, especially pudding bowls. I'm looking out for the Pyrex with the vegetable print (not sure what that one was called) as that's my favourite. I also love the M&S brown print...these only cost me 20p! I've seen other trays but they are always expensive.

I'm really challenging myself with food because I am overweight and not getting any younger! Three good meals a day is the aim and no rubbish!

      Xx

I was married in the 70s so all the kitchenalia is just what I had back then....if only I had known how popular it would be 40 years later :-)

    1. Thanks Karen!
It sometimes pays to be a hoarder then! I actually have a few bits of Tupperware from my childhood and a few other bits and bobs given to me when I got my first house. I love the style but you're right, beryl ware is hard to find...I suppose it's because it belonged to places like village and church halls xx

  4. Hi Mandy, great to see you blogging again. I am also a 1971 baby :-) And you know what my home is like I adore the 70's décor and lots of my wallpaper in my home is from this time period. Loving all your buys especially the tea set you showed first I am pretty sure I have the matching tea pot to that some where in the loft, and I love the good old Marks and spencers brown and orange place mates also loving the orange flower power curtains. I think its good to think about what we eat especially now when there is so much fresh food available to us. Good luck with your new eating plan look forward to the next chapter with you, dee xx
