Here's part 2 of my audit - the fridges

Hi everyone!

I didn't have time to do a freezer audit yesterday, but will try harder today!

I have two large fridges which are always full. I have:

  • butter x 2 large packs
  • Daisy's sunflower marg
  • clover marg x 2
  • dripping
  • cooking marg - large tub
  • cheddar x 2
  • soft cheese
  • Daisy's lactofree cheese x 2
  • primula tube
  • mozzarella
  • few slices of ham
  • coleslaw
  • tomatoes
  • cucumbers x 2
  • spring onion
  • red onions
  • brown onions
  • celery
  • courgettes x 3
  • lemons x4
  • few mushrooms
  • strawberries x 2 punnets
  • cress
  • pate x 2
  • lettuce
  • mayo
  • single cream x 2
  • double cream x 2
  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • new potatoes
  • old potatoes
  • baking potatoes
  • swede
  • parsnips
  • half white cabbage
  • half red cabbage
  • milk
  • orange juice x 2
  • beetroot
  • cauliflower
Obviously I will need to shop for fresh things, but I need to ensure that there is no waste!!! I need to get into the habit of going through the fridges and check what needs using up before it's too late. Anything that I'm not able to use for us does go to the chickens - they love lettuce.

I will post up my freezer contents tomorrow.

Yesterday's tea was a quick one - a fry up!
We had sausage, bacon, hash browns, plum tomatoes/beans, mushrooms, egg and toast. Daisy had her cheesy veg. Tonight we are having fresh beef burgers, wedges, homemade coleslaw and salad.

  1. Hi Mandy, I have enjoyed reading your blog. I can understand the tiredness - looked after grandchildren while Daughter worked.

    1. Hi Taaleedee, thanks for your comment!
I'm so happy that you have enjoyed my blog. Have I seen you commenting over on Shirley Goode's blog?

Daisy slept a little better last night, but you never seem to catch up on lost sleep.

  2. Hello, Mandy, just discovered your blog through Frugal Queen.Have bookmarked your page so I can follow your frugal journey. I too looked after my small grandsons ( they spent half of each day with me) when their Father was ill and their mum, our daughter, ran their shop and looked after the boys' father. I found it so exhausting and would 'granny' nap when they went home. I admire you looking after your granddaughter fulltime - well done. You will catch up with the housework but the love and security and stability you are giving your granddaughter is a priceless gift. Heather from South Australia.

    1. Welcome to my blog Heather!

You also did something amazing for your grandsons, daughter and son-in-law. Our daughter was pregnant at 16 and wasn't ready to be a mum. Daisy is nearly 10 months old and now mummy wants her to live with her! Hard as it is to keep going, it will break my heart to let her go. We knew it would happen one day though. Troubled times ahead.

Thank you for your lovely comment, I really appreciate it.

  3. Hi Mandy,
I too did find your blog through Frugal Queen and am so glad I did. Your stories had me engrossed for most of the day yesterday trying to read as much as I could.
I too have a grandchild living with me, hes called Daniel and is now 6. My daughter lives 3 doors away from us but he flatly refuses to move in with her since we have brought him up from the minute he was born when my daughter was only a week away from her 17th birthday.
The circumstances were rather strange as she didn't tell us she was pregnant until half a hour before giving birth!!!!!
We gradually came to terms with the fact and after a quick rally round from us and the then boyfriends parents/family we managed to get everything together for the new arrival.
They split about 6 months later and she stayed living with us.
Unfortunately 2 years later she did the self same thing again, this time giving us 4 hours notice that she was in labour. This time I could not forgive her and did disown her for a month. I moved out and went to live with my dad.
I eventually came round to he idea but find a lot of my trust in her has gone. We said if she continued to see Alfies father we would not support her in any way and she was on her own as we did detest him for various reasons.
She did split from him but as he lives in the same village they still see each other most days (as friends) and his parents do have a lot to do with both of our grandsons even though Daniel is not their blood relation. They even take them on holiday every year but I do not get on with them and tolerate this but that's just the way I feel about my daughters ex's family.
I work part time 4 hours a day in industrial cleaning and my hubby works 12 hour shifts 4 days a week (different shifts each week) so we do find it hard and tiring some times.
I have now built a better relationship with my daughter and as I said she only lives a few doors away so we share looking after Daniel when it falls that both my hubby and I are at work at the same time. She takes them both to school and brings them home and sometimes Daniel will stay there for his tea and occasionally stays the night but very rarely as he never wants to be away from us for long.
As both husband and I are 46 it can be hard at times as its like strting over again when we should actually be enjoying our freedom but I wouldn't change it for he world, my oldest grandson is the best thing to happen to us. I unfortunately don't get along with the youngest as well as I should but hopefully that will improve in time.
So you can imagine finding your blog was an inspiration for me and I will continue to be an avid follower. I admire you for what you are doing for your granddaughter and hope everything works out for thebest with your daughter. If she is anything like mine she will realise just how lucky she is to have a supportive family but they just need to do it in their own time.
take care, Jane - West Yorkshire

  4. We often have at least one meal a week where we use up the odd bits and pieces that are about to go off in the fridge - it sometimes makes for an odd meal but it stops us from forgetting about things that in previous times would have went to waste.

I plan on having a breakfast for dinner next week funnily enough! With the Mister on nights it will be the perfect dinner for us come mid-week. Sx
